  • 0.25 tsp salt
Wet ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Add-ins

  • 0.5 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped Optional.
Caramel drizzle
  • 0.25 cup caramel sauce

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Prep and mix
  1. Preheat oven to 350F and grease a 9x13 baking pan, then set it aside with the oven rack in the center position.
  2. Whisk all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together in a bowl until evenly combined.
  3. Whisk melted butter and granulated sugar and brown sugar until smooth, then whisk in eggs and vanilla extract until the mixture looks glossy.
  4. Fold the flour mixture into the wet ingredients just until no dry streaks remain, then fold in diced apples and walnuts or pecans if using.
Bake and finish
  1. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan, then bake 30-35 minutes at 350F until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
  2. Cool in the pan, then drizzle caramel sauce over the top before cutting into squares.

Notes

Pro tip: dice the apples finely so they distribute through the batter without turning the brownies cakey. Store covered in the refrigerator up to 4 days; freeze baked, well-wrapped squares up to 2 months. For a dairy-free swap, use a 1:1 plant butter for the melted butter (texture may be slightly softer).
