Ingredients

Flour base
  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3 tbsp butter, melted
  • 0.75 cup milk
  • 8 Roasting sticks

Equipment

  • 1 cast iron skillet

Method

Mix the dough
  1. Combine all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a large zip-top bag until evenly distributed.
  2. Add melted butter and milk to the bag, seal it, and knead until a cohesive dough forms.
Shape around sticks
  1. Divide the dough into 8 portions.
  2. Roll each portion into a long rope and wrap it around the end of a roasting stick.
Roast over campfire coals
  1. Hold the stick bread over campfire coals and rotate constantly for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Keep roasting and rotating until the bread is cooked through and the outside looks crusty.
Serve
  1. Slide the campfire bread off the stick and serve warm with butter, jam, or honey.

Notes

Tip: Keep the coals at a steady glow—if flames flare, move the bread slightly to prevent dark spots before the center cooks through. Store leftovers covered in the fridge up to 3 days; rewarm in a skillet over medium heat. Freezing is yes (wrap well) for up to 2 months and thaw then rewarm. For a dairy-free version, use a plant-based butter and substitute milk with unsweetened oat milk in the same amount.
